The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has equipped the Experimental Agricultural Farm with a new high-tech greenhouse, which will allow the Fruit Growing Department of the Ministry of the Primary Sector and Food Sovereignty to study the physiology of tropical and subtropical species under different controlled environmental conditions.

"The experimentation and subsequent transfer of knowledge of new crop systems that are more sustainable and resilient to climate change will make the island's farms more competitive," assured the president of the Island Government, Antonio Morales, during the inauguration of this new facility. “The Corporation designed and constructed this intelligent greenhouse with three specific objectives: promoting the effective use of plant genetic resources and their accessibility, promoting the sustainable management of farms, and favoring the diversification of the commercial offer, both for the local and export markets,” he stated.

The Experimental Agricultural Farm has the necessary infrastructure to be able to optimize the behavior of new varieties, which in principle will be papayas, in the face of extreme climatic events, under the increasingly recurrent conditions of thermal, hydric, and water quality issues stressing the crops. The installation, which has required an investment of 150,000 euro, has modularity and independent climatic and nutritional control, which will allow experts to evaluate the development of these species, subjected to different stress levels.

It is a multi-tunnel type greenhouse with a Gothic roof and a maximum area of approximately 2,160 square meters, built with flexible plastic sheets and anti-trip mesh sides. It has a weather station, a fogging system, and automated opening and closing of its sides and cover.
