DIponegoro University Students, Faculty of EngineeringPemalang, (28/09/2022) -- Coffee farmers in Indonesia generally use natural drying using sunlight to dry coffee. With traditional drying methods such as roadside drying, farmers are often faced with contamination in their crops, such as rainwater, dust, ultraviolet light / light. As a result of these factors 30 - 50 % of their results can not reach market value, and have no economic value. This is the main complaint of coffee farmers because the quality of the coffee produced is not too good so it cannot compete with coffee farmers whose processing is more modern.Greenhouse Solar Dryer Dome which is an innovation for drying agricultural products which is a new breakthrough to cut the time needed for drying which is usually done by farmers. The dome functions like a greenhouse, with a polycarbonate sheet construction, so the temperature inside the dome can be increased up to 100%, compared to the outside temperature. However, this method still has its drawbacks, farmers complain that coffee beans that are dried using a greenhouse solar dryer dome are more susceptible to fungal infections.Of course this is a very big loss for coffee farmers. One of the farmer groups who feel this is the MSME Kopi Cap Tugu Juang, Pemalang Regency."Drying coffee beans in the greenhouse solar dryer dome is indeed faster to dry, but the coffee beans in the dome are more prone to mold growth compared to coffee beans that are traditionally dried," said Pak Hasan as the owner of the Cap Tugu Juang Coffee MSME.Based on this, Diponegoro University KKNT students observed the causes of fungus on coffee beans that were dried at the Greenhouse Solar Dryer Dome.It was found that local farmers in Pemalang district have not implemented a good air circulation system in the coffee bean drying dome, so a fan is needed to get in and out of the air.The emergence of the fungus itself is caused by the evaporated water vapor trapped in the dome so that the dry coffee beans quickly absorb the water vapor again. This happens repeatedly so that the coffee beans will be moist and cause mold.Departing from this, Undip University KKNT students implemented the use of blower fans in the greenhouse solar dryer dome. The mechanism of using a blower fan in a greenhouse solar dryer dome is that the water vapor that evaporates from the coffee beans will be channeled out of the dome by the presence of a blower fan. This is expected to prevent the emergence of fungus on coffee beans. The use of a blower can also help the drying process evenly on the coffee beans. This of course will be very beneficial for farmers, not only benefiting from time-wise with faster drying of coffee beans than traditional methods, the coffee beans produced can also improve the quality of coffee beans.
