Mexico will be back in green home jerseys for the 2022 World Cup, the Mexican Football Federation and Adidas revealed Friday. The new kits will debut Monday when the Mexican women's team faces the United States at the CONCACAF W Championship — a qualifying game for the 2023 World Cup.

The Mexican team has traditionally worn green home kits, which date back to the 1958 World Cup, but the federation strayed from them last year for the black and pink "Rosa Mexicano” jersey.

The new jerseys — which are kelly green overlaid with thin, black zig-zagging lines that radiate from the neck — are inspired by Quetzalcoatl, one of Mexico's major deities, according to a release. Quetzalcoatl is depicted as a serpent with feathers on its neck. The zig-zagging lines are a reference to a feathered headdress called a "copilli" in Spanish, which represents religious and noble power in ancient Mexican culture.

The jerseys have a rounded neck with red stripes, and the back is supposed to resemble Quetzalcoatl's plumage.

"For this season’s home jersey which will be worn on football’s biggest stage, we wanted to capture the spirit of the nation with a design that is deeply rooted in the culture of Mexico," James Webb, Adidas senior product designer, said in the release. "The head and feathered headdress of Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl is displayed with pride on the shirt which features a completely new crest. We hope it will help be a symbol to bring the players and fans together as they meet with their toughest opponents.”

The Mexican men's team opens the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Poland on Nov. 22.
