North America: growers believe it is necessary to switch to hydroponic cattle feed production

During the CubicFarms AMPLIFIED event, Dan Schmidt, President of HydroGreen, said: “We see increased demand and focus on North America. At the same time, we continue to receive international inquiries from farmers and investors looking for solutions to grow more products using less land. Water, energy and manual labor."

CubicFarms HydroGreen is a Canadian local agricultural technology supplier that provides two automated indoor planting technologies: one is used to grow fresh food in the CubicFarm system, and the other is used to grow nutritious fresh livestock feed in the HydroGreen growth system.

The main benefit is that it is harvested every day in any climate, 365 days a year, and automated indoor agricultural technology grows from seed to super feed in six days, and the land and water used by the system are significantly reduced by 90%, with zero pesticides or fertilizers. .

Transfer from outdoor to indoor CubicFarms and HydroGreen technology was created by farmers. "We are focused on growing wheat and barley in a patented automated system designed for farmers facing water shortages in areas with low rainfall."

The company is collecting more data on animal health and performance improvements, especially in beef and dairy cows, and is conducting research.

"What dairy nutritionists and farmers are looking for is consistency. This system provides live, high-quality fresh animal feed on the farm every day," Dan said. He added that the type of feed can be changed, depending on whether the animal is pre-calving, calving, milking or dry.

Consistency is the biggest concern for farm owners, followed closely by the uncertainty of dealing with outdoor planting. "In Colorado, you can't drill or move wells, or even collect rainwater," Dan said. He commented on state laws and policies on water resources, especially in the Midwest, where access to water becomes more and more difficult. , These regulations and policies are being tightened.

Cost-effectiveness This technology provides good conditions for seeds to grow within six days in an indoor climate controlled environment. HydroGreen's plant science and animal performance teams work with farmer partners (customers) to use the technology to select seeds that perform best in the HydroGreen growth system.

The savings and added value depend on several variables, specific to each farm. Dan explained that, for example, using HydroGreen Vertical Pastures (12 commercial-scale HydroGreen Grow system modules) to grow feed can grow up to 25 million pounds of fresh feed every year. This replaces 500 acres of farmland, which is equivalent to 380 football fields. Compared with irrigated crops, it can also save up to 500 million gallons of water each year: enough water for everyone on the planet to drink a glass of water.

Nutrients Dan explained that cattle need a balanced fiber, grains, protein, vitamins and minerals, and plenty of fresh water. HydroGreen is a super feed for dairy cows because it is highly digestible (90%) and is rich in enzymes, vitamins and energy that promote performance and health. The HydroGreen Grow System is made by germinating wheat and barley seeds.

Contributing to a healthier environment A university study published by Science Canada Press in FACETS, the official journal of the Canadian Academy of Sciences, confirms that using HydroGreen can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CubicFarms is interested in contributing to climate mitigation goals in the agricultural industry through localized food and feed production and reducing long supply chains.

Growth process: From seed to harvest, imagine a fully automated indoor hydroponic system with eight vertically stacked growth surfaces. One person on the control touch screen can complete all operations with the push of a button, automatic seeding, watering, lighting, and HVAC control of temperature and humidity. Farmers can grow at different speeds at each level, allowing farmers to harvest fresh feed every day of the year in any climate.

On the sixth day, the automatic conveyor rolls the feed along the automatic conveyor, like a roll of fresh green carpet, for harvesting and shredding. This is mixed with daily rations and delivered to cows (or buffaloes or other livestock).
