The Hungarian tomato growing has been strongly transformed and improved in the last 10 years. A high percentage of old, outdated growing facilities were upgraded or replaced by new Venlo greenhouses installed with the latest technologies. Some growers can already reach 70kg/m2 yield in greenhouses operating with climate controllers, supplementary lighting, and diffuse glass.

To give more attention to this rapidly developing industry, the Hungarian Tomato Day was organized for the first time on 29 June 2022 in Southern Hungary (Mórahalom). The professional conference is organized by FruitVeB - Hungarian Interprofessional Organization for Fruit and Vegetable. More than 200 participants and 33 exhibitor companies attended the conference, which also grabbed the attention of the professional press.

To make the event more exciting and useful, 33 exhibitor companies operating in the field of or associated with greenhouse production, such as seed breeders, facility builders, input suppliers, or other agritech firms. The professional day could also be attended by a wider audience. Professional growers were able to listen to the presentations of the best-renowned specialists from the Hungarian horticultural sector and also leaders of acknowledged Dutch and Polish companies, leading innovators of the sector.

Current status of the industry  Currently, Hungarian greenhouse tomato production is operating on approximately 380-400 hectares -120 hectares of which are cutting-edge greenhouses – producing a total of 140 000 tons of tomatoes per year. It can be said that during most of the year, Hungary is self-sufficient of tomatoes for fresh consumption thanks to the continuously spreading greenhouse investments. The overall tomato export percentage of the country has grown by about 15% in the last year and shows an increasing trend.
