GARDENING might be more of a summer thing for you, but that doesn't mean you should totally forget about your outdoor space during autumn and winter.

There's loads you can do in your outdoor space this October that will make garden look so lush your neighbours will be jealous.

According to the pros at Thompson & Morgan this month there's plenty to be getting on with that isn't too complicated.

October is the perfect time to sort out your boarders by moving shrubs and tress as well as planting hedges.

You can tidy up your space by cleaning up overhanging plants and cutting back perennials.

The pros also recommend insulating plants for the winter by adding mulch - this could be anything from leaf mould, bark chips or manure.

If you're growing pumpkins ready for Halloween, now is the perfect time to harvest time to make sure they wont be damaged by frost.

And if you've got any tomato or pepper plants now is the time to bring them inside to ripen.

You can also finish harvesting peas and beans now - remember to leave the roots in the ground to benefit your soil.

If you have cabbage in your garden you can encourage new growth by cutting across the stem in the ground.

For fruits, it's important to move any citrus trees inside, but remember to keep the plants away from radiators to avoid drying them out.

Keep your lawn looking lush by regularly cleaning up fallen leaves, this will also let the light shine on the grass, keeping it green.

Now is also the last time you should cut your grass before leaving until next year.

If you have a greenhouse, the gardening pros recommend giving it a good clean this October to prevent pests and let more light in.

You should also protect half-hardy plants, this could be done by bringing them into a greenhouse or adding a fleece.

You can also check the soil to see if it is dry, give it one last water before the ground hardens with frost.

And although bringing certain plants inside during autumn and winter can stop them being affect by frost, you should first check them for pests like aphids, the pros say.
