Fri-El Green House produces tomatoes sold under its own H2Orto brand. The use of high-tech hydroponics technology enables them to grow throughout the year. The company was founded in 2015 by the Fri-El Group in Ostellato (Ferrara), one of Italy’s leading renewable energy (wind, biomass, and biogas) power producers, headquartered in Rome

Two new iron glass greenhouses Ostellato 3 and Ostellato 4 are part of their ambitious project. 10 hectares have already been put into use, and another 10 hectares will be put into use in March 2022.

“Fri-El Green House is the first producer that can supply Italian tomatoes from the same location throughout the year, and its production system uses 70% less surface and 70% less water than traditional crops,” explained director Alessio Orlandi. He showed how their greenhouse uses the remaining hot water produced by the adjacent biogas plant for partial heating, thereby recovering precious energy. "In addition, they use LED lights to light up to ensure low energy consumption and sufficient light to avoid waste."

Other greenhouses under construction will be completed in 2022

"The goal of European policy is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with zero impact on the climate. An important factor in achieving this goal is the transition to a circular economy. Our company has combined renewable energy, reduced carbon dioxide emissions and low It affects agricultural production and also recycles residues and reintroduces them into the production cycle. Our goal is to achieve zero impact as soon as possible," Alessio concluded.

H2Orto currently produces TOV, cocktails and cherry tomatoes. "Our IPM strategy and our ecosystem are closed loops, managed with software that monitors climate, irrigation and humidity, eliminating waste and reusing all the important components of plants," said Alessio. "In this way, they can grow high-quality tomatoes throughout the year."
