SALT LAKE CITY – The heat has been no joke so far this summer. The sun is great for many plants, but the heat is another story. 

In the latest  KSL Greenhouse Show, hosts Maria Shilaos and Taun Beddes are joined by horticulturist Sheriden Hansen to learn how the heat is impacting our vegetables.

It’s obvious that the excessive heat is having a negative effect on the growth of fruit and vegetables . Especially tomato plants. Blossom drop, poor pollination, and failure to set fruit are all common issues that are brought on by the heat.

The only thing we can do is be patient according to Hansen. 

“It’s that game of being patient, and I know it’s so hard. Everyone wants that glorious produce that they’ve been dreaming of since early spring.” Hansen said.

Don’t want to sit by idly as your tomatoes look less and less impressive by the day? Hansen suggests getting a 30% shade fabric to cut down on the amount of sun that is reaching your plants. This can help reprieve some of the negative effects that the heat may be having on your garden.

Try to not be discouraged by plant loss. Many growers are reporting 20-40% crop loss on their tomatoes. Many growers are also experiencing curly top virus in their tomatoes. If you notice this in your tomatoes, Hansen suggests pulling out all plants that are affected in order to stop the spread and rid of the virus.
