New Castle (November 23, 2021)-Poinsettia grown in the greenhouse of the Herman Holloway campus of the Ministry of Health and Social Services near New Castle. The annual in-person sale of the poinsettia began on November 29 and lasted until December 22 day.

The greenhouse is operated by Bright Spot Urban Farm, which is operated by West End Neighbourhood House in Wilmington. The Department of Health and Social Services reached an agreement with West End to operate a greenhouse and garden on the Herman Holloway campus. Proceeds from the sale of nearly 3,500 poinsettias planted this season will help support youth projects in the West District.

There are red, white, pink and a variety of special colors to choose from. The 6.5-inch pot is $9.50 each, and the special color is $10 (including Viking Cinnamon, Winter Rose Crimson, Prestige Maroon, Superba Glitter, Golden Glo, Alpha White And Hot Pink). For orders of more than 25 plants, the price per plant is US$8.50. The plants in the 8.5-inch pots come in red, white, and red and white mixed colors, and each sells for $30. There is also a smaller 4.5-inch pot (tabletop size) for $4.50 each. It comes in red, white, Golden Glo, cinnamon, Princettia Hot Pink, Princettia Pink and Pure White. Gift tags can also be purchased for $1 each.

The price includes the aluminum foil packaging on the pan. Regardless of the number of plants, the delivery is a fixed fee of $9 within a 20-mile radius of the greenhouse. You can order online using the order form at Brightspotfarms.org/shopholidays.

Bright Spot Urban Farm believes that the power of agriculture can change people by building confidence and fostering leadership. The program provides paid training in agriculture and gardening for high school students. The purpose is to heal and enhance the abilities of young people by rooting agriculture in community service ethics.

“Bright Spot Farms provides practical training to Newcastle County high school-age young people throughout the spring, summer and autumn growing seasons,” said Bright Spot Project Director Ruth Arias. "The training focuses on agriculture, gardening and landscaping. Selected youths participate in leadership training. The training includes weekly courses, focusing on public speaking, team building, food insecurity, botany and other topics, which will Make them the future leaders of the program. This year, the work of young people has supported more than 110 families in growing agricultural products."

Students participate in one or more three-month courses. In addition to conflict resolution, problem solving, and public speaking, they also learn different aspects of production, marketing, and sales. Students selected for the second year will receive leadership training and will guide and mentor new students in the program.

"We are grateful to West End Neighborhood House for the youth employment training and leadership program at our Herman Holloway campus," said DHSS Minister Molly Magarik. "We are very happy to support the sales of flowers, plants, vegetables and poinsettia grown and harvested by young people every year. For DHSS, this is the essence of the community."

The greenhouse is located at Herman Holloway Campus, 1901 N. DuPont Highway (US 13) and is open to the public. Follow the signs for the greenhouse. The greenhouse will be open for sales without reservation from November 29th to December 22nd. Business hours are from 11 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday, and from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. The greenhouse will be closed on Sunday. Bright Spot accepts cash, checks or credit cards.

Bright Spot Urban Farm believes that the power of agriculture can change people by building confidence and fostering leadership. The program provides paid training in agriculture and gardening for high school students. The purpose is to heal and enhance the abilities of young people by rooting agriculture in community service ethics.

“Bright Spot Farms provides practical training to Newcastle County high school-age young people throughout the spring, summer and autumn growing seasons,” said Bright Spot Project Director Ruth Arias. "The training focuses on agriculture, gardening and landscaping. Selected youths participate in leadership training. The training includes weekly courses, focusing on public speaking, team building, food insecurity, botany and other topics, which will Make them the future leaders of the program. This year, the work of young people has supported more than 110 families in growing agricultural products."

Students participate in one or more three-month courses. In addition to conflict resolution, problem solving, and public speaking, they also learn different aspects of production, marketing, and sales. Students selected for the second year will receive leadership training and will guide and mentor new students in the program.

"We are grateful to West End Neighborhood House for the youth employment training and leadership program at our Herman Holloway campus," said DHSS Minister Molly Magarik. "We are very happy to support the sales of flowers, plants, vegetables and poinsettia grown and harvested by young people every year. For DHSS, this is the essence of the community."

The greenhouse is located at Herman Holloway Campus, 1901 N. DuPont Highway (US 13) and is open to the public. Follow the signs for the greenhouse. The greenhouse will be open for sales without reservation from November 29th to December 22nd. Business hours are from 11 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday, and from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. The greenhouse will be closed on Sunday. Bright Spot accepts cash, checks or credit cards.
