Gardeners who are familiar with the hot and humid temperatures of traditional greenhouses may be surprised when they visit a local flower shop.

Robben Flower Shop and Garden Center is about to complete its greenhouse renovation project of nearly 100,000 US dollars. Two greenhouses were built last fall, and the other two greenhouses are expected to be completed by the end of September.

The original greenhouse was built when Robben Florist opened in 1931.

Keith Bemerer, a sales and designer at greenhouse manufacturer Rough Brothers Inc., says they are durable.

However, Bemerer, who worked with Robben Florist during the project, said that for a period of time, restoration with wood is necessary.

"We want to modernize and reduce heat loss in winter," said Larry Robben, chief grower and manager of Robben Flower Shop.

The wooden A-frame structure is rebuilt in galvanized steel in Gothic arch style with continuous roof vents.

This roof vent will adjust the temperature so that people will notice a more comfortable environment when they walk into the greenhouse.

Bemerer said that the greenhouse was built to provide more cooling and square footage.

This is not only better for customers, but also better for the factory itself. Ron Robben, the owner of Robben Florist, said that through the updated design, more light is provided for the plants. He said that the greenhouse is now more comfortable, taller and more open.

In addition, Larry Robben said that newer greenhouses will help prevent moisture from affecting plants. He said that because of the age, this has always been a persistent problem in the previous greenhouse.

The four greenhouses will occupy 128,000 square feet and provide an additional 10% of space.

In preparation for the upcoming holidays, poinsettia will be grown in the greenhouse in the next few weeks.
