Starting today, Cru will provide early fresh ginger on its market. Ginger is grown locally in a sustainable manner, no pesticides are used, and only a minimum of organic fertilizers are used. High-quality ginger has a stronger flavor than imported ginger and minimizes its ecological footprint. Early ginger is the result of sustainable innovation between Colruyt Group and REO Veiling (REO Auction) and Provinciaal Proefcentrum voor de Groenteteelt (Provincial Vegetable Production Experimental Center).

As a retailer of fresh Belgian ginger at Cru in early November, Colruyt Group is becoming more and more aware of the impact of food on our health and the planet. We have been committed to making our products more sustainable in order to provide customers with conscious sustainable choices. In this context, the Colruyt Group cooperated with REO Veiling and Provinciaal Proefcentrum voor de Groenteteelt to launch a pilot project to grow early fresh ginger locally in Belgium. This is a project of the Cru Food Innovation Team of the Colruyt Group, which reduces the ecological footprint of ginger through sustainable local cultivation.

Locally and sustainably grown early ginger is grown in the glass greenhouse of Provinciaal Proefcentrum voor de Groenteteelt and under the unheated plastic tunnel and cold greenhouse of two growers of REO Veiling. Ginger is planted in spring after Bingsheng and harvested in autumn. When planting, at least use organic fertilizers and no pesticides. Growing locally will emit less carbon dioxide because less transportation is required to get the product into the hands of consumers. Belgian ginger is delivered to your plate from the field. Traditionally, ginger comes from Asia and South America, which gives the product a larger ecological footprint.

Cru exclusively supplies high-quality Belgian ginger grown in spring and temporarily available at the Cru fresh market in Antwerp, Overijse and Ghent from the beginning of November. Then it's time to wait for the next harvest. Cru's customers are the first to have the opportunity to taste this local product. The root of the ginger plant is a popular ingredient. Consumers are using it more and more because it is very healthy and very suitable for flavoring fresh dishes, ginger syrup or ginger powder. Internal taste and user tests have confirmed that this Belgian ginger is different from conventional products from Brazil, Peru and China. Therefore, the Colruyt Group is proud to be able to sell this delicious and ultra-fresh product from Belgian soil.
